...music underground...

flute.jpg

One of the things that I loved when I moved to New York was walking onto the subway platform and hearing music. Always.
Music, as a soundtrack in the background of the speed of nyc.
After a bit of time (when I stopped getting lost all the time) I would bring my camera with me and take some shots. I'll begin to post some of them up here.
I shoot with mostly 3200 speed film. Which means for non-photographers that I don't need a lot of light to get my shot. Then as a prints it gets really grainy and lovely texture.

This flute player played at 1/9 line on the 66th Street stop. (Lincoln center) He was so expressive with his playing, and would stand in this really wide stance.
Really move and sway while playing...

...hanner show...

hanner.jpg

On Saturday the Boy and I went to see Hanner. I think we have seen most of her shows, but she just keeps getting better and better. The show was at Pete's Candy store (a candy store turned bar in Williamsburg) and the music area is marvelous. Small and intimate, the perfect way to watch Hanner. There was great golden light (not so great for photos) but great for painting-like photos. It was amazing. If you ever get the chance to see her, jump at it!!
Hanner is also know as Johanna. She is quite amazing. Case in point her talent on the ukulele and a second show at Last Exit (all in one crazy busy weekend).

...bring your pet to blog #3...

The amazing girls over at port2port started the pet thing and the new 'truth spy' (which I will get to later), but first my pet. Well not my pet, one of my boss’s pets, Buddy. He is quite a character and now is a bit chubby (this is an oldish photo), because he has been sneaking kitten food like crazy.

So I went to see Over the Rhine last night and it was a late great night. They had two opening acts:
Stephanie Dosen who had such an angelic voice contrasted with a mouth like a sailors. She was hilarious. She looks like a little pixie then she opens her mouth and makes you laugh. I was really glad we got to the show early, just to see her.
Then there was Kim Taylor who was really mellow, yet she rocked. The Boy was excited because she was playing on a new brand of guitar that her has heard about, Reverend, and he was glad to know that it sounded good! She had a throaty sort of voice with electric guitar, can't get better than a rocker chick!
Over the Rhine plays great live. And my favorite song is Born whose lyrics pierce my heart:

I was born to laugh
learned to laugh
through my tears

They have such melancholy lyrics that Karin Bergquist sings sweetly into my soul with this lush musical sound, even if there isn't lots instruments playing. Linford Detweiler weaves beauty and grace.

My 'truth spy' (they haven't really named it yet) is this:
Walking to work, running late because I have been having insomnia lately and I am really tired in the mornings and I walked by this man walking his son to school and he had a t-shirt on that made me stop in my tracks and turn around to watch him walk.
TIME
IS AN INVENTION

interesting.....

...I was in love with Alex P. Keaton...

I was watching tv and noticed a show called Nueva Estrella. And so, because I am easily seduced, I watched it and it was suprisingly good. In the same vain of American Idol, but the performers have talent. And there are no mean spirited judges. Maxx (who has gone on to the final round) sang "At this moment" when he did I was transported back to the days when I was in love with Alex P. Keaton (I know I was young and silly, he was so stuffy and never really took a risk. Though he did with Ellen and she turned out to be his real life wife!) and my heart was breaking as he tried to catch the train for Ellen, who was engaged to another guy. I loved to imagine that I would be the girl that would break someone's heart. That someone would put himself out there and love me above all else. Plus have the soundtrack to play in the background. I think that is why I love listening to the ipod, I can imagine it is the soundtrack to my movie. The movie that I am staring in. I am a little mad at itunes though. They don't have the song. I mean how could they. It is a classic. A classic I tell you! I am going to have to go out and get one of those 80's albums that the Boy hates. He thinks that pretty much all music in the 80's blows. It is all pretty cheesy, but it makes a girl feel good sometimes or makes her able to wallow in her bad feelings. Silly I know, but very true. I have sort of felt like wallowing lately. I feel like I am slipping into honey. Like it's hard to walk, to do anything really. It comes and goes the slipping into honey. But I will always have Alex and now I can go out and get "our" song. So so silly!!!!!

Remember him in Teen Wolf? What a sill girl I was!

...music on a school night...

I work with the very talented Johanna who had a gig on Tuesday night. She was amazing. I wish I brought my camera. She was sitting on a cushion/stool, with this beautiful white skirt and tank with her great cowboy boots. The lights were making her glow. She was mesmerizing. Her music is quirky and so beautiful. The melodies are marvelous in their simplicity. Plus she plays the ukulele and the lyrics makes me grin. Really really love it.

Then her super talented boyfriend went on next with his band The Pages. The were releasing their EP album "Creatures of the Earth". They totally rocked! I love their song Robots. Sweet and amazing lyrics.
