really glad for friday (but no painting)...

We had a really crazy week here. Long nights, early mornings, and I just couldn't pull it together to get a painting done for today. I was thinking that I would have to wait awhile for fedex to pick up the backdrops and I could squeeze in a painting, but our guy got here in no time.
Fingers crossed that there are no hitches and it makes it to California tomorrow morning. We painted two huge backdrops for Weeds. And everyone is exhausted. Got the job Tuesday to be completed TODAY. And we did it. The boss lady is really amazing! One of the backdrops was 20' high by 18' wide and the other was 18' high x 23' wide. Started the second one last night. The joys of working late. I really can't believe we made it. I don't know how that happens. Its like the theater and the show must go on. I was here and I am still amazed.

Instead of a full painting I have beginnings on a couple. One more that needs to be stretched. I have notes on this photo here.

Spoon is my most favorite place in the world for breakfast.
I love the people that work there...they make my day.
It is a ritual that even durning my poorest days I would allow myself that treat.
A cup of hot chocolate - perfect and not too sweet and a delicious buttery scone.

The long birds (so named until the Boy thinks of something more clever) and I did a photoshoot at Spoon...photos inside next week.

This was the only time we had someone come up to us while we were shooting. It was early in the day, so I didn't have a spiel about what we were doing. When I said that no I wasn't in school, she gave me the weirdest look. I guess you can't do wierd things without being in school? Who knew?

This is one of the last photos, we were walking home from the diner. But I already have ideas for the next time. Plus I have some film to pick up today.

Check out Mr. Toast at Coney Island taken by the talented Anne!

I am extremely proud of the Boy. He just started his new film! Hurrah! Not only that, but he has a deadline for the video game and two short films that he is finishing up. Busy week for him! After that we have to have a little celebration.

A huge thanks to Kath for my write up about my robots in whipup! I feel so honored! You'd think I get my act together and post some of my new robots, but no such luck! I hope the birds are ok as a replacement for now.

I took this photo when Aiko was here. We were headed up to the Cloisters.
It is surprising how terrible she (the singer, I mean) was...how unbelievably wrong her voice was.
But something made her really amazing.
Something just made me watch...her sing Besame Mucho.

painting - I mean sketch....

Here is a couple more shots of the softies around town - I even managed to work orange into the mix today! What I did not manage to do was get my painting completed or even started, so instead here is my sketch. (my excuse - fighting off this low-grade cold thing - feeling loads better today, but just trying to take it really easy)
I still have more photos of the softies for next week and going to take some of the tall birds today. The Boy attached them to wood and I must say they look fantastic. I am totally smitten with them! So photos of them next week too.

We covered a lot, captured some great moments.
I will show more this and the next couple of weeks.

a naked cowboy...

This was my first time ever seeing the Naked Cowboy.
{A quick little research on the web and I found out he has his own website. I don't really know why I am surprised. I have more than one website, so why shouldn't he.}
I had just moved to the city and wham there was a naked guy walking in Times Square. I was shocked. Then he did a little turn and I saw that he had some tighty-whiteys on and I was a bit less shocked. Still pretty surprised. More surprised though by the business people walking by, they didn't even give him a second look. I mean the guy is playing his guitar in underwear for crying out loud.
I have seen Naked Cowboy quite a few times since my first encounter and the shock has worn off. So those businessmen going to lunch must see him everyday, therefore no shock.
Living and working in this big city I have seen countless strange things, people dressed in the most ridiculous outfits. Carrying anything and everything on the subway. It seems so normal now. I guess what is strange is how normal changes.

painting for friday #20...

"flock" (name idea from ky)

wow, I made it to twenty.

I have been painting with clear gesso. I love it. I love the tooth it gives, but then it has this great effect.

Light from behind.

Another shot from behind. (too bad the stretcher bars aren't transparent)
Kind of fun.

Does anyone else do an even or odd number thing when they create?
I have to do odd...there are nine birds for #20.
Five last week for #19.
Three blue & one yellow for #18....it continues, it is a bit of a compulsion. But I like it!

And for a little fun on your friday!

Sending a HUGE birthday wish to the writing half of the la power couple! Have an amazing day. Wish we could be there!

Olive is really unsure about living in the city. She tried to find a high roost in the studio. But it is just not the same as living with Alicia. I hope once I get her home she'll start to relax and enjoy the change of living in the city.

train to nowhere...

One summer during college I drove across the country and photographed my journey. I would constantly be spying something from the car, and then turn around the next exit to go back and photograph it. I was especially attracted to the forgotten things and I was driving through the south so there was a plethora. I saw those tracks from the car but I didn't decide soon enough to pull over the car, so I came up to the next intersection and turned back around. Then turned back around to catch up with the tracks again.

I slipped into a totally focused moment, so when I heard "excuse me miss". I almost jumped out of my skin. I slowly turned around because I was not on super public roads and looked over my shoulder. And to my delight it was an officer of the law. It seems as if during my space out a sheriff's car had pulled up behind me and then the officer walked over to my car. As my stomach was doing summersaults and pretty much wigging out. I tried to form words. I brought up the camera and then pointed to the gorgeous train tracks over this small little river.
Shakily I said, “I was just taking pictures".
The officer just smiled at me and said he just wanted to make sure everything was all right. Then he walked back to his car and waited for me to pull back onto the road. I think my body buzzed for the next hour, but I got some really amazing shots of the train tracks.

My reason for making the trip was an internship in Nashville, working with a photographer. (I was blessed to meet them Dean and his wife, two of the best people I know). It was a great learning experience and my ability to make that trip gave me the confidence to try my hand at New York City. (I am so glad I was naive enough not to know how different those events would be!)
